Finals are almost over. You’ll make it, I promise!

It’s that time of year again, wrapping up another semester. Somehow it’s 47 and raining today…not sure how that happened. Anyways, this message is probably greeting you while you’re studying like mad and working on projects to finally finish up the semester. Well, take a quick break and read this. You deserve it.

This has been yet another great semester. And from all of us committee heads and executive board (some in our snazzy christmas sweaters)….christmas party

Have a very happy holidays and safe travels! We don’t have any graduating seniors this semester, so we look forward to seeing you all again in the Spring semester!

and finally, a few closing words from our amazing section president, Samantha Kallman…

A farewell to the Fall semester. From Orientation Week to the first snow fall, the Michigan Tech Society of Women Engineers section has not ceased to amaze me. There were a lot of great firsts for our section this semester; A SWEat Spirit Homecoming Sprint 5K that raised over $700 for the local Barbara Gundlach Kettle Shelter, an Upper Peninsula and Northern Wisconsin SWE Girl Scout day that was filled with hands on activities that promoted science, technology, engineering, and math to young girls, and the launch of our new section website – can we say wow! This semester could not have been successful without the careful planning of committee heads and the participation of our section members. Speaking of participation we had a recording break attendance at our annual cider pressing event at our advisor, Dr. Gretchen Hein’s house…36 members!!

A reflection back to WE14, our section received recognition in many forms. Our section counselor, Britta Jost received the Distinguished New Engineer Award. Our mighty alumnae, Dr. Kailtyn Bunker received the Outstanding Collegiate Member award. Elizabeth Wohlford was awarded second place in the Undergraduate Collegiate Poster Competition. Kathrine Cipriano and Samantha Kallman both were accepted and chosen to participate in the Collegiate Leadership Institute. Both, Dr. Gretchen Hein and Dr. Bunker organized and spoke at workshops. The section as a whole was able to sponsor 17 members – that is a first and we hope to continue the growth.
A farewell to some strong graduating members. SWE has been one of the best experiences I have been a part of over the past four years and I can only hope the same for each and every graduating member. I know that the graduating members will be prepared for the future ahead of them as they begin their next journey in life. Wherever that journey may be, remember to always aspire, advance, achieve.
A look into next semester. Next semester will begin with the ever strong mountains of snow which will pave the way for our Winter Carnival involvement; a snow statue and All-Nighter fundraising. The section will begin to engage and grow graduate student involvement in the Society of Women Engineers. And the semester would not be complete without the Region H Conference down at Notre Dame. All of this will be topped off with the elections of new committee heads and executive board members. I personally look forward to the growth of our section, but more importantly the growth of members.
Thank you for a great fall semester and I am looking forward to my final semester as a Michigan Tech Society of Women Engineers member! Enjoy the holidays!

Great update Ericka and Sam! I loved reading about what the section has been up to. It sounds like there are more great things to come in the spring semester!
